This session will explore the concept of ‘difference’ as compared with ‘normality’ within the framework of the 2012 Equalities Act of 2010, with a particular focus on the protected characteristics of race and religion.  It will investigate key terminology to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of injustice.  A short film will be viewed to explore the effect of religious stereotyping and ways in which we can challenge prejudice and discrimination will be considered.

 

By the end of the workshop session members will be able to:

 

  • Explain key definitions and concepts
  • Understand their role in relation to the Public Sector Equality Duty under the Equality Act 2010.
  • Understand the experience of difference for people with a legally protected characteristic – race and religion
  • Recognise how personal values and perceptions can inform unconscious bias and the potential impact in communities
  • Gain awareness of approaches they may use to challenge racial discrimination

Successful Money in Mind project comes to an end

Big Lottery funding for the Money in Mind project will run out at the end of September 2014. The Money in Mind project has provided free support with money management to small groups in Brighton & Hove since October 2009.

Over 300 groups have been helped with training, advice and information, two free downloadable accounts systems, and free access to an examination of accounts service. An independent evaluation of the project in August 2014 found that:

  • Groups found the support offered by the Money in Mind project to be of excellent quality, and all beneficiaries would recommend the service to their colleagues and friends.
  • A large majority of groups who received support from the Money in Mind project reported that their skills, confidence and knowledge had improved following the support.
  • A majority of groups reported that they were better able to raise funds following the support they had received.

From October 2014, the Resource Centre has put aside funds to continue this free support for small groups who are based in areas of social housing, black and minority ethnic community groups, and disabled people’s groups.

For other groups, the following services are currently available:

Community Works are interested in finding out how many groups would find free examination of accounts or money management advice services useful, to help them with future planning (but they are not offering it at the moment). It is worth contacting them to tell them you would like to use these services if they are able to offer them in future. Free workshop to begin Simply Quality Protects scheme

Safety Net are running a free Getting Started Bronze Workshop for the Simple Quality Protects (SQP) Scheme on Wednesday 25th September from 10:00 – 12:00 in Portslade

SQP is a quality assurance self-assessment tool for all voluntary and community organisations working with children and young people. It is evidence based and takes you through three levels of achievement – Bronze, Silver and Gold.

When you are ready you can progress to a nationally accredited quality mark, such as PQASSO. SQP can help to show commissioners and funders you have a good Quality Assurance Programme in place which helps ensure good practice and  that the children, young people and families you work with are fully safeguarded.

‘Applying For Grants’ workshop 17th Sept

Do you work with marginalised people and want to find funding? Do you know marginalised artists or writers who are looking for funding for their projects? Have you got a creative project idea which will engage marginalised people that you want to find funding for?

Dominique De-Light from Creative Future is running an ‘Applying For Grants’ workshop where you will learn the basics of applying for grants and tips on where to look for them. The workshop will cover what funders are looking for, points to cover in your application and a one to one consultation to discuss ideas you want to seek funding for. There will also be an in-depth look at the Arts Council application process.

The next course is on Wednesday 17th September 2014, 10am-5pm at Community Base. Cost: £7 (income under £20k)/£15 per workshop for individuals. £35 if attending on behalf of an organisation.

The Tutor: Dominique De-Light is the co-founder of Creative Future. She has been fundraising for ten years for her own writing development, arts projects and Creative Future. In that time she has raised over half a million pounds from local authorities, the Arts Council, the National Lottery, private trusts and foundations, and the European Social Fund.

Free ‘fundraising techniques and back office skills’ training 17th and 18th Sept 2014

For the third year the FSI is bringing two days of free training to Brighton so that all small charities, wherever they are, can access the skills they need to become self sustaining. Training sessions cover a wide range of fundraising techniques and back office skills delivered by experienced and knowledgeable trainers.  Each course has a market value of £310 per delegate place, course places are donated to small charities by the sponsors, donors, funders and Trustees of the FSI.

Understanding your sports club finances

Brighton & Hove City Council Sports Development Team are running a free club leaders workshop on managing club finances.

It is on Monday 15th September 2014, 6:30pm-8:30pm

This free workshop is for volunteers who have a responsibility for managing club finances.
The face-to-face training focuses on key business skills that clubs need to be sustainable and include case studies, topical issues, exercises and a discussion section which gives clubs leaders the chance to ask questions and share their experiences with the group.
